FAQ

1. What is UTSMS?

UTSMS (Under The Sky Mojar School) is a unique educational program aimed at providing free education to underprivileged and street children. Unlike traditional schools, UTSMS operates in open spaces to make education accessible to children who have no access to formal schooling. It provides free classes, meals, and essential resources to children, ensuring they have an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve their futures regardless of their background.

UTSMS plays a pivotal role in addressing the education gap for children who are not part of the formal education system. Many of these children live on the streets or in underserved areas, and without initiatives like UTSMS, they would be left behind. By providing education, food, and a safe environment, UTSMS empowers these children with essential skills, self-confidence, and hope, enabling them to create a better future for themselves and contribute positively to their communities.

UTSMS is managed by a team of dedicated volunteers, teachers, and coordinators who work under Mojar School’s leadership. As part of Mojar School’s larger ecosystem, UTSMS benefits from shared resources, infrastructure, and expertise. Both programs are aligned with the mission to provide education, care, and development to underprivileged children. UTSMS leverages Mojar School’s operational experience, funding, and strategies to enhance the quality of education and support provided to these children.

Anyone can support UTSMS by volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness. Volunteers can teach, help organize programs, or assist at our learning points. Donors can provide financial help or sponsor items like food, clothes, or school supplies. To get involved, visit our website or attend an orientation. Every contribution, big or small, helps create meaningful change for underprivileged children through UTSMS.

Anyone with a heart to serve, the patience to engage with underprivileged children, and a mindset for social change can volunteer. No prior experience is required.

Volunteers assist in teaching basic literacy and numeracy, distributing food, managing class activities, and building emotional connections with children through games and storytelling.

Currently, UTSMS operates at 6 points in Dhaka and multiple divisional points across Bangladesh. Locations include parks, railway stations, footpaths, and slum areas.

Regular volunteers are expected to contribute 100 hours per session, usually spread over 3–4 months. However, short-term opportunities are also available during festivals or special events.

  1. 0 – 20 Minutes: Physical Exercises
Warm-up activities to encourage physical health, teamwork, and energy.
  2. 20 – 40 Minutes: National Anthem
Singing the national anthem together instills patriotism and a sense of unity.
  3. 40 – 60 Minutes: Bonding Time
Open discussions to build strong bonds between volunteers and children, fostering trust and companionship.
  4. 60 – 90 Minutes: Basic Reading and Writing
Following a non-formal education approach aligned with the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), this segment covers essential reading and writing skills.
  5. 90 – 110 Minutes: “Color Your Dream” Session
This creative activity lets children express their aspirations through art, helping them envision their dreams.

110 – 120 Minutes: Food Distribution & Wrap-Up

Recruitment is divided into four structured stages:

1.1 Application Process

  • Interested individuals must apply through the Mojar School website or the official Google form managed by HQ.
  • Once the application is received, HQ coordinates a 3-hour Volunteer Orientation Session for selected applicants.
  • At the end of the orientation, participants receive a Volunteer Certification, valid until the last month of the current year.

1.2 Joining a Team

  • Certified volunteers are eligible to join any UTSMS Operational Point.
  • Volunteers are encouraged to join the point nearest to their current residence, educational institution, or workplace to minimize travel stress.
  • Personal transport owners can choose any location based on their preference.
  • Volunteers who must travel long distances (e.g., via bus) are discouraged due to safety and sustainability concerns.

1.3 Volunteer Commitment

  • Volunteers are required to dedicate 3 hours weekly to their selected operational point.
  • They must arrive 30 minutes before class starts to help with setup and remain after class for the traditional “T-Adda” bonding session with fellow volunteers.

1.4 Certification and Communication

  • After receiving their certification, volunteers will be provided with their point coordinator’s official contact details to facilitate communication.
  • Coordinators will assign volunteers to teams based on the point’s needs and the volunteer’s preferences.
